The Red Hook Lobster Pound was founded by Ralph Gorham and Susan Povich. While sitting at their dining table in Red Hook, Brooklyn, devouring fresh lobsters that they had just brought back from a friend in Portland, Ralph proposed to his wife Susan that they open a lobster pound in the empty storefront in the building that they owned, and were unable to develop due to the contracting credit markets.
Given that Susan’s family is from Maine, the idea was not that far-fetched. Ralph and Susan opened the Red Hook Lobster Pound six months later and it became the food success of the year, with people coming from hundreds of miles to sample the freshest lobster in NYC. Ralph drove to Maine each week, to pick out the freshest catch he can find. Susan oversees the lobster roll extravaganza, which to Ralph’s dismay has expanded to any menu item that Susan can add lobster to. This past Fall the Lobster Mac and Cheese took NYC by storm. RHLP also pops up at many city outdoor and indoor markets and puts on lobster boils all spring, summer and fall at various venues, including bars and restaurants.
We have three rolling lobster shacks (a/k/ FOOD TRUCKS), one in New York and 2 in Washington DC! We are looking for partners in any viable location so call or email if you want to set up your own Lobster Pound!
The media has covered all aspects of RHLP extensively, latching onto Susan and Ralph as the “entrepreneurial success story” of last year. Inc. Magazine named them one of Brooklyn’s Top 10 Entrepreneurs. RHLP has become the “goto” source for the media on all things lobster (or Maine for that matter). RHLP has been featured in the New York Times, New York Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, Inc. Magazine, the Village Voice, The Washington Post, Washingtonian The New York Daily News, the New York Post, Crains NY, Martha Stewart, Tasting Table, Thrillist, Urban Daddy, and NBC among others.
